Topic introduction

The big picture

Islamic equity investing asks two different questions: whether ownership of a business meets the applicable Shariah methodology, and whether the way you buy, finance and hold that ownership is acceptable. A screened company can still suffer losses, become overvalued or fail a later review. This topic builds an evidence trail from published screening to account practices. It explains why a dated list is more useful than a permanent “Islamic” label, and why purification and investment risk require separate attention. It is an educational framework; individual religious determinations should be resolved with a qualified Shariah adviser using the actual facts.

Core concepts

Business activities and financial ratios are separate screening gates.KMI30 is a selected benchmark, not every eligible company.Compliance evidence has a methodology and an effective date.Purification, transaction structure and market risk need separate reviews.

Learning objectives

  1. Explain what a screening decision does and does not establish.
  2. Find dated eligibility evidence and distinguish KMI30 from the broader universe.
  3. Read a methodology change without applying it prematurely.
  4. Create a monitoring and purification record for a hypothetical holding.
Chapter 01

1. Start with the business, then the financial screen

1.1 What the company actually does

A share is a claim on a company whose activities, assets and obligations continue after purchase. Shariah screening therefore begins with the underlying business, rather than a chart pattern or an attractive dividend. Read the stated principal activities, segment information and material income sources. A familiar consumer brand may belong to a group with several different activities; knowing the product alone does not complete the review. The applicable screening methodology determines which activities are excluded and how incidental non-compliant income is treated.

1.2 Why a label is insufficient

Business eligibility is only the first gate. Financial screens examine specified relationships involving debt, investments, income, liquidity or assets. Ratios must use the definitions and financial statements required by that methodology. “Debt divided by something” is not a reproducible calculation unless the numerator, denominator, reporting period and consolidation basis are known. Investors should use the official screening output and understand its basis, rather than inventing a personal replacement rule from a social-media summary.

Step-by-step method

  1. Identify the legal company and its principal revenue activities.
  2. Locate the applicable published business and financial screening method.
  3. Record the financial reporting date and the official screening conclusion.
Practical application / case study

A learner sees a technology company described as Islamic online. Its annual report shows several revenue segments. The learner checks the official screening list and review period before treating the headline description as evidence.

Chapter 02

2. Use KMI30 as a benchmark, not the complete universe

2.1 Eligibility versus selection

Having established what screening means, distinguish eligibility from index construction. KMI30 tracks a selected group of thirty Shariah-compliant companies under its published methodology. Selection also concerns investability and index rules. The broader PSX-KMI All Share Index serves a different coverage purpose. A compliant company outside KMI30 is not automatically prohibited, and presence in KMI30 does not certify that its market price is reasonable. The index answers a benchmark question within a defined process.

2.2 Read membership with its date

Index weights and company membership can change. A fund that tracks an index also has its own expenses, dealing conditions and tracking difference; buying one constituent is not equivalent to buying the benchmark. Keep the official recomposition announcement, review cut-off and implementation date together. A notice published today may describe a change that becomes effective later. Historical comparisons need the membership applicable at that time, otherwise the exercise can silently select only companies that survived later screening.

Step-by-step method

  1. Find the relevant KMI30 or All Share announcement.
  2. Separate the review date, announcement date and effective date.
  3. Check valuation and concentration independently of index eligibility.
Practical application / case study

A company is absent from the thirty-stock index but appears in the broader eligible list. The learner investigates the index selection rules instead of interpreting absence as an automatic Shariah failure.

Chapter 03

3. Read financial thresholds and transitions correctly

3.1 Ratios depend on definitions

Financial screening is a controlled method, not a promise that every ratio will remain constant between reviews. Read the official definitions and all relevant criteria together. A ratio based on book assets can differ sharply from one based on market value; substituting the denominator can reverse the result. Similarly, mixing a consolidated numerator with standalone assets can produce a convincing but invalid percentage. Preserve the underlying statement date and any reviewer clarification.

3.2 A published change may be prospective

An important dated example is PSX notice N-244 of26 February2026. It announced a reduction in the debt-to-total-assets screening limit from37% to33%, with implementation from the November2026 recomposition based on the specified June2026 statements. At22 October2026 that announced implementation is still ahead. Do not rewrite all earlier eligibility decisions using the future threshold, or assume that one ratio alone establishes compliance. The notice also contains other framework changes; read it as a complete document when applying it.

Step-by-step method

  1. Read the entire notice, including implementation language.
  2. Match the calculation to the specified reporting period and definitions.
  3. Confirm the effective review result rather than calculating a final ruling from one ratio.
Practical application / case study

A hypothetical company has a comparable debt ratio of35%. It lies below37% and above33%. That arithmetic identifies a transition concern; it cannot by itself determine the company’s current or future overall compliance.

Chapter 04

4. Purification and the structure of your transaction

4.1 Incidental income and records

A permitted investment may still involve an identified amount of non-compliant income under the applicable screening framework. Purification addresses that issue using the approved method and reliable figures. It is not a discretionary donation that changes a prohibited principal business into an eligible one. Obtain the relevant published purification guidance, confirm the period and income basis, and preserve evidence of the calculation and disposal. Do not assume the same percentage applies forever or to every type of return.

4.2 Financing is a separate decision

The manner of investing also matters. A company-level screening result does not approve every financing arrangement, margin product, borrowing facility, short sale or securities-lending transaction involving its shares. Read the actual account and product agreements. Ask who reviews their Shariah structure, what that review covers and whether ordinary cash settlement differs from a financed position. This topic does not claim that a particular broker offers a reviewed Islamic account: verify the actual service and documentation before relying on that description.

Step-by-step method

  1. Obtain a period-specific purification basis from a reliable reviewer.
  2. Keep the income amount, ratio, calculation and disposal record together.
  3. Review account financing and transaction terms separately from company screening.
Practical application / case study

A learner holds an eligible share through a financed trading arrangement. The share’s screening does not answer whether the financing contract is acceptable. The learner obtains the product documents and seeks a separate qualified review.

Chapter 05

5. Build a continuing Islamic investment process

5.1 Compliance and financial suitability

A compliant asset can be concentrated, illiquid or financially weak. Apply ordinary investment analysis after screening: understand earnings quality, cash flow, debt maturity, valuation and portfolio exposure. An Islamic label does not guarantee capital, dividends or a favourable sale price. Diversify within the permitted universe and choose a holding period that fits the money’s purpose. A near-term essential payment should not depend on a volatile equity position recovering on schedule.

5.2 Respond to changes with a documented plan

Create a review calendar tied to financial disclosures and official screening updates. Record what happens if eligibility changes, using the applicable methodology and qualified guidance rather than an improvised universal disposal deadline. Corporate actions and changes in the company’s operations can also justify review. A useful decision log contains the evidence available when you acted, your risk rationale, purification obligations and the next review trigger. This makes the learning process repeatable even when the conclusion changes.

Step-by-step method

  1. Set financial risk limits alongside compliance checks.
  2. Monitor official disclosures and the next screening implementation date.
  3. Document the response to an eligibility change and obtain guidance where needed.
Practical application / case study

Two eligible companies operate in the same cyclical sector. A beginner initially calls the pair diversified, then notices their profits depend on the same commodity. The learner reduces that concentration while retaining the eligibility review process.

Frequently asked questions

Does KMI30 membership guarantee a profit?

No. It does not remove business, valuation, liquidity or market risk.

Is every compliant company in KMI30?

No. The selected thirty-company benchmark is distinct from the broader screened universe.

Can I apply an announced ratio change immediately?

Read its effective date and transition provisions; announcement and implementation may differ.

Does purification approve any investment?

No. It addresses specified incidental income under applicable guidance, not an excluded principal business or every transaction structure.

Your learner task

Build a hypothetical screening file for one listed company. Record business activities, the official eligible-list date, relevant methodology, any transition notice, account structure questions and a financial risk assessment. Add a purification evidence checklist without inventing a personal religious ruling.
